If I read correctly, the racetrack install had a "custom" Mantaray horn (9 foot), if this be the case, I wonder, did Altec make custom components for special application or was this someone else's creation? Sounds like a massive and almost sculptural piece, I'd love to see a picture of it!

The horn was designed by Jerry Hubbard, former Chief Engineer of acoustics at ALTEC and built locally out of aluminum and damped with aquaplas. It was driven by two (2) 290 drivers. This thing really throws. It looks like a giant MR42. The mouth is about five feet wide. As far as keeping in contact with the owners , we did, It seems the new operator plays bass guitar with some of the technicians of the new vendor.

I have seen and HEARD some major city sound systems, ( arenas, cocert halls) go from lower powered tube Altec systems that really sounded GREAT....., to newest technology EQ'ed,compressed, and then down to "Radio Shack" sound.........

What good is it to "compress" and "limit" the new BIG,BIG, HIGH-POWER power-amps driving the small multiples of stage speakers........might as well use lower powered systems driving FANTASTIC HIGHLY EFFICIENT REAL LOUDSPEAKERS such as the BIG ALTECS!

At BIG LIVE recent ROCK music concerts I have been to in the audience myself in the past five years, such as "Cher" , "Garbage", "Beck", "No Dought", "Erythimics", "Alanis Morrissette", "Go Go's", "B-52's", and others............

The sound is very good ,BUT SO LOUD< IT HAS ME PUTTING MY EARPLUGS IN JUST TO BE ABLE TO HEAR IT half-way "AUDIBLE", and UNDERSTANDABLE !!
